BEDA Day 20 - R.I.P Elisabeth Sladen (Looking back on Sarah Jane and Doctor Who)

HELLO NERDFIGHTERS!!! -sigh- I'm guessing that most of you have heard the terrible news of actress Elisabeth Sladen (most well known for her character of Sarah Jane Smith in "Doctor Who" and "The Sarah Jane Adventures") passing at just the age of 63...

Back in 2005/06 when i first started to watch Doctor Who, i was quite the novice. Back then, all I knew was that there was the Doctor, the TARDIS, the Daleks, that the show was bout time/space travel, and that the Doctor had always had a companion on his adventures.

I remember...

...this photo prior to David and Matt. Also, by the time David Tennant started as the 10th Doctor, this image popping up for me in a search:

Back then, i didn't know who any of these people were except for Rose. (SJS is the one in deep purple with brown hair in the first row)

After seeing this picture, i did my research and started to look at "which companion travelled with what doctor" and i do remember Sarah Jane Smith sticking out in my mind (prior to her return in 2006). I spose it was because i read that Tom Baker was in the classic days, "the most favoured Doctor". So i read up on her probably the most at this time due to her long run on the show as with both Tom Baker (4th Doctor) and Jon Pertwee (3rd Doctor).

These days, i would most definitely say that she was my companion from back in the classic days. I favoured the episodes such as "The Time Warrior", "The Sontaren Experiment", "Genesis of the Daleks","The Brain of Morbius" and other such titles that she appeared in. In the new Doctor Who, i enjoyed her first appearance with David Tennant, Rose Tyler and Mickey Smith, (bringing back with her K9) in "School Reunion". I took great pleasure in any past episode references, and what's a bigger reference to the new show revival, but with bringing one of the most significant characters from the good old days? This appearance of Elisabeth's character was a HUGE highlight in my early Doctor Who experience. Not just with me, but with many other fans, including that of Russell T. Davis (responsible for the revival of Doctor Who) who as stated in the video above thought that it was an honour to work with such an amazing person such as she.

This brings me to my next point of the Doctor Who Spin-Off show that starred Sarah Jane Smith in the self named "The Sarah Jane Adventures".

Oh what a wonderful show, a bit more childish for some, but for me, any Doctor Who BBC spin-off, is a spin-off worth watching. This show was definitely the case. So sorry Torchwood, but you'll have to wait your turn closer to Miracle Day's release haha. :P

The Sarah Jane Adventures is a fantastic show that proves that you can go off and have adventures on your own, and that there is more than meets the eye in the world that we call home. So this time, it's up to her and her gang to save the world, and to solve the mysteries of the universe.

This show has produced 4 full series, and an additional 6 episodes completed for series 5. It is now uncertain what the ultimate destiny is for this show. I very much so enjoyed the show, i loved the character of Sarah Jane Smith in all of her television appearances and that I genuinely miss Elisabeth Sladen in all her glory. She will be missed, and remembered for all that she was. My thoughts go out to her family and friends on this sad day of mourning. Rest in Peace.

So that raps up my blog for today, looking back on a truly wonderful lady who has touched many hearts on and off screen. Cheers everyone. DFTBA!
